GRADUATE STUDENTS
Samantha BakkeLab ManagerSamantha is a first-year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at The New School. Samantha received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Binghamton University. During her time at Binghamton, she worked in the Center for Transdisciplinary Research on Intimate Relationships with Dr. Richard Mattson. Her research interests include reward devaluation, trauma, and global mental health. Congratulations to Sammi on her recent successful MA thesis!

Sonora GoldmanSonora is a first-year Clinical Psychology doctoral student. Her current research is concerned with the climate crisis and it’s impact on the psyche across culture, social identity, and differential access to power. Her masters thesis looks at fear of happiness and moral injury within a climate change context utilizing network analysis. Sonora is the lead doctoral student managing the labs R15 NIMH grant investigating reward devaluation in depressed individuals.

Evan HenritzeEvan Henritze is a fourth-year Clinical Psychology doctoral student. Evan's primary research is on the effects of climate change on mental health. Evan's dissertation uses network analysis to investigate the moral injuries associated with climate trauma based on social identity and access to political power. He has also conducted research on psychotherapy process and the interpersonal skills of clinicians. His principal advisor is Adam Brown, and he has also been working closely with the EPEP laboratory since Fall 2021. Congratulations to Evan on his recent successful dissertation proposal!

Michael is a third-year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at Mississippi State. Michael received his Bachelor of Science degree in clinical psychology at Marywood University. During his time at Marywood, he worked in the Cognitive and Perceptual Sciences Lab with Dr. Edward Crawley. His research interests include reward devaluation, attention, research methodology, and network analysis. Congratulations to Michael on his recent successful thesis defense and his first-authored paper in the Behavior Therapist!

Jenna is a fifth-year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology PhD Program at Mississippi State, currently on internship at Atascadero State Hospital in Atascadero, CA. She also completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 2016 and has been part of the EPEP laboratory since January 2013. During her time in the laboratory, she has lead a longitudinal data collection and managed her own thesis project while also contributing to our R15 NIMH grant. Jenna's research interests include long term self-regulation tendencies and reward devaluation with a particular interest in network analysis in relation to how depression is conceptualized among Black Americans, the latter of which is the focus of her dissertation. Amanda is a sixth-year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology PhD Program at Mississippi State University, currently on internship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Amanda joined the lab after having completed her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Arkansas, with a major in Biology. While at Arkansas, she worked in the Laboratory for Emotion and Addictive Processes with Dr. Jennifer Veilleux. Amanda helps manage our R15 NIMH grant, and her research interests include investigating reward devaluation and self-referential processing in depressed individuals using network modeling and meta-analytic techniques. In addition, she is interested in investigating how depressed individuals respond to digital interventions and treatments targeting positive affect over time. David Perry LincerDavid is a second-year graduate student in the Psychology MA program at the New School, where he researches how biological and psychological theories of psychopathology interact in the clinic. He earned a previous MA in Psychology from Adelphi University and a BA from the classical liberal arts and sciences program at St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. Clinically, David has specialized in neuromodulation since 2018, and provides TMS and QEEG services at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He plans to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology with a neuropsychodynamic focus.

Sarah SimonSarah is a second-year graduate student in the General Psychology MA program at the New School for Social Research, and is working towards a PhD! Sarah received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology at the State University of New York at Geneseo, where she worked in a memory and cognition lab with Dr. Jason Ozubko and interned at an outpatient substance misuse clinic. Before starting her graduate work, she lived in Ecuador and Uruguay for a total of four years, where she earned her certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), as well as a Fulbright grant. As a graduate student, she strives to conduct research from a critical lens, inspired by cognitive science’s many tools, as well as liberation psychology’s stress on the interconnectedness of relationships, experience, and society under domination culture.

Josh StellJosh is a second-year graduate student in the General Psychology MA program at the New School for Social Research. Josh received his bachelor’s degree from Rider University’s choral conservatory Westminster Choir College, and has experience working as a professional musician, critical pedagogue, and social worker. His current professional interests include psychodynamic clinical methods, hate groups
and political extremists, social and political psychology, perceived Theory of Mind, and LGBT mental health. Josh will has presented at several student conferences including: "In My Mind" 2022 and an LGBT BIPOC conference, at the Association for the Psychoanalysis of Culture and Society. |
Caroline McEneaneyCaroline is a second-year graduate student in the MA program at the New School. Her research interests include global mental health, depression, suicidality, and body-based interventions, including the psychological mechanisms that facilitate change within holistic practices like yoga. Caroline will be helping with the R15 and working on updating the lab's Network Analysis publication information.

Cami CalafioreCami is a first year master’s student in the psychology program at The New School. Cami joined the lab after completing her master’s in clinical psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. Before that, Cami completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Wake Forest University. While at Teachers College she worked in the Regulation of Emotion in Anxiety and Depression Lab with Dr. Doug Mennin. Cami’s research interests include investigating reward devaluation, diagnostic comorbidities, and psychotherapeutic interventions targeting comorbid anxiety and depression.

Amudha BalaramanAmudha is a first-year student in the M.A. Psychology program at The New School. She is a career-changer from the public education field, where she has over 10 years of experience as an analyst and education researcher, specializing in program evaluation. She has also served as a middle school Language Arts teacher. Amudha earned a previous M.A. in Education and Social Policy from New York University and a B.A. in English from Cornell University. Her current research interests in clinical psychology include emotional processes and appraisals, psychedelic-assisted therapy, boredom, scalable mental health initiatives, and mental health equity. Clinically, she is interested in supporting individuals facing challenges related to depression, anxiety, and substance misuse.

Ali BebryAli is a first year masters student in the General Psychology program at The New School for Social Research where she researches the relationships between music listening practices and affect regulation, self regulation, and emotions. She has joined the lab as a Research Assistant after finishing her undergraduate studies in Contemporary Music and Psychology at Eugene Lang College at The New School. She is the Graduate Advisor for the university's Psychology Club and Psi Chi Honors Society Chapter.

Amelia CollinsAmelia is a first-year graduate student in the General Psychology MA program at the New
School for Social Research. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied psychology and art history. During her time at Sarah Lawrence, Amelia worked alongside Dr. Barbara Schecter to conduct research on play-based education in preschool settings and the developmental impact of loose-parts play. Alongside her studies, Amelia works as a teacher at Brooklyn Treehouse Preschool. Her research interests include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and the mental health impacts of misdiagnosis and under-diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in women and girls. |
Julia MachinaJulia is a second-year graduate student in the Psychology MA program at the New School for Social Research with a focus in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling. Julia received her BA with concentrations in Psychology, Visual Arts, and German from Sarah Lawrence College in 2020. Her research interests include the impact of Reward Devaluation on depression treatment for Black American men, substance use disorder treatment for incarcerated and post-incarcerated populations, and the impact of incarceration on attachment bonds. In addition to pursuing academic research and participating in the clinical externship program, Julia also works at the American Institute for Mental Imagery, a nonprofit post-graduate institution that specializes in teaching Mental Imagery practices.

Rebecca SillsRebecca is a first-year graduate student in the General Psychology MA program at the New School for Social Research. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from The City College of New York (CCNY), where she graduated summa cum laude with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology. In 2021 she was the recipient of the Francis P. Hardesty award for excellence in psychology and research potential. During her time at CCNY, Rebecca worked closely with City Tutors as a writing tutor for undergraduate students in STEM and psychology. Additionally, over her final three semesters, Rebecca worked as an aide for students in experimental psychology as part of an independent study. Upon graduation, she worked with Dr. Jon Horvitz, creating test bank questions for his latest textbook on behavioral neuroscience. Rebecca has worked closely with refugee populations in Vermont and currently volunteers with RAINN, the largest anti-sexual violence organization in the US. Her areas of interest include behavior and motivation in individuals experiencing depression, as well as anxiety disorders, and therapeutic treatments for individuals experiencing rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.

Kate FlahertyKate is a first year MA student at NSSR. She received a B.A. with a concentration in Neuropsychology from Sarah Lawrence College, during which she began working on cognition research. She started her post-collegiate career at New York University with an interdisciplinary study of human behavior, where she began as a Research Assistant before being promoted to Research Manager. She transitioned to a Clinical Research Coordinator at Columbia University, then to a Clinical Research Supervisor at Memorial Sloan Kettering in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. Her current professional research centers on neurocognitive assessment, psychotherapy intervention development, and psychometric development. She has worked with multiple imaging modalities, including fMRI, EEG, eye-tracking, PET, and SPECT/CT. Her graduate research interest is broadly in schizophrenia spectrum disorders, with a particular interest in utilizing neurocognitive data to identify targets for evidence-based interventions. She is also passionate about advocacy and de-stigmatization of mental illness.

Aidan Kartha
Aidan is a first year masters student at The New School's Psychology program. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Psychology from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. His research interests focus on depression and anhedonia as well as global mental health and learning how to make mental health care and education more accessible.

Laurence Robin-Hunter

Laurence is a first-year student in the M.A. Psychology program at The New School. She earned a Ph.D. in Geopolitics from the Sorbonne and a J.D. from Columbia Law School with a concentration in Human Rights. As a humanitarian worker, Laurence has worked closely with refugee populations in refugee camps in Bosnia and Kosovo. As a Human Rights lawyer, she has represented asylum seekers and death row inmates in the U.S. Her graduate research interest is broadly in the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on mental health. In particular, she is interested in the link between child abuse and adult depression and how early adversity may be closely connected to devaluation of positivity in adults.

Nour Bseiso Assistant Lab Manager
Nour recently graduated from the New School with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She joined the lab in the Spring of 2022 and feels inspired by her peers’ work around reward devaluation, self-referential positivity and anhedonia. Her interests include positive and negative emotions, emotion regulation, cognitive-behavioral and dialectical-behavior treatments, emotion replication and multicultural considerations in treatment. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a Masters and PhD in clinical psychology. She is currently working in a post-bachelor position at the lab.

Shea McNattShea is a fourth-year undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at The New School in New York City. During her time in the Emotional Processes and Experimental Psychopathology Lab, Shea has assisted graduate students researching moral injury and climate trauma, and the relinquishment of happiness in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her research interests include reward devaluation and network analysis. Shea plans to investigate her interests further when she undertakes her senior capstone project in Spring 2023.

Layla is a third-year undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at the New School. She joined Dr. Winer's lab in Spring 2022 and has enjoyed developing her research skills in her time at the lab. Layla has worked with graduate students on projects related to moral injury and climate trauma. She looks forward to exploring the subjects of reward devaluation and anhedonia more deeply. Layla is interested in multicultural approaches to treatment and integrative trauma therapies. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Masters in Clinical Social Work.

Taban Salem, Ph.D
Dr. Salem is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS. Before accepting a tenure-track position, Dr. Salem completed a Presidential post-doctoral fellowship at the Ohio State University's Department of Psychiatry, where she worked with Mary Fristad, after having completed her APA-Accredited internship at SUNY Stony Brook and her PhD here at Mississippi State working with Dr. Winer. Dr. Salem's research interests include mechanisms of emotion regulation, interactions of cognition and emotion over time, and perceived causal beliefs among depressed persons.

Gage Jordan, Ph.D.
Dr. Jordan is currently an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at Murray State University. He is also currently a co-leader of the ABCT Clinical Research Methods and Statistics special interest group (abctstat.org). He graduated from the Clinical Psychology PhD program at Mississippi State in 2020, working with Dr. Winer, and finished his APA-Accredited internship at the Southwest Consortium in Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Jordan’s research interests include anhedonia, network analysis, and fears of positivity in depressed persons.

Alisson Lass, Ph.D.Dr. Lass is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Clinical Health Psychology at The Mayo Clinic with a clinical emphasis in integrated behavioral health. She graduated from Mississippi State University in 2022, and she completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Ann Arbor VAMC. Her research interests include the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of depressive symptoms, along with cognitive and emotional processes, such as reward devaluation and distress tolerance, that impact symptoms of depression over time.

Jessica Bryant, Ph.DDr. Bryant graduated from the Clinical Psychology PhD program at MSU in 2018, having worked on questions of fearing positivity, anhedonia, and treatment choice with Dr. Winer. She completed her APA-Accredited internship at the Mississippi State Hospital in Jackson, MS, and her clinical fellowship at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System in Little Rock, AR. She currently is a staff psychologist at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System.

UNDERGRADUATE ALUMNI
Gemma Park, B.S.Gemma (Bohyun) graduated from MSU with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in the spring of 2020. She joined the lab in the fall of 2019 to learn more about cognitive bias in individuals with mood disorders, with a specific interest in attentional bias. After graduation, Gemma worked at pediatric and adult psychiatric labs in South Korea, where she developed her interest in neural substrates of the interaction between emotion regulation and cognitive ability in individuals with depression and anxiety. She is currently in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at the University of South Florida. Her current research interests include using different ERP components to predict internalizing and externalizing symptoms and examining the role of emotion regulation in alleviating and aggravating symptom severity.

Ashlynn McCainAshlynn is a senior undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor’s of Art in Communication. She joined the lab in Spring 2019 to further learn about the effects of depression. Ashlynn plans to purse a Ph.D. in clinical psychology after graduating from State and hopes to one day teach at a university. Her research interests include self-harm, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and ideations, the genetic influence on mental health, and the experience of childhood and its effect on adult life.

Colton is a Provost Scholar at Mississippi State and joined the lab in Spring 2019 and is interested in anxiety and anxiety-related disorders. After completing his undergraduate degree, Colton plans to attend medical school with an eye on MD/PhD programs.

Julie is a sophomore undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Mississippi State University. She joined the lab in Fall 2020 to advance her knowledge and experience with psychopathology research. After completing her undergraduate degree, Julie plans to pursue either a Masters or PhD in Psychology. She hopes to gain more insight into potential career paths through working in the lab.

Carson AllenCarson graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Psychology in Spring 2019. Carson joined the lab in Summer 2018 to gain experience in psychopathology research. His research interests include pediatric psychopathology and early interventions. Carson is currently working as a full-time post-baccalaureate research assistant on the CHild Access to Mental Health and Psychiatry (CHAMP) team in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Jordan Mayes
Jordan graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Mississippi State University. Jordan joined the lab in Spring 2019 after graduating to gain more experience and knowledge regarding psychopathology. Jordan is currently attending medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Matthew DunawayMatthew joined the lab in Summer 2014, and contributed by helping run subjects, aiding in the conceptualization of new studies, and by contributing to papers examining psychopathology and inhibitory cognitive mechanisms. He will complete his Master's degree from Georgia State University in Summer of 2021, defending a thesis on negative emotion and music. In Fall of 2021, Matthew will begin working on his Ph.D. in Psychology within the University of Michigan Psychology Department's Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience area.

Brooke is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Psychology at Villanova University. After graduation, she plans to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

Toni graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in Spring 2020. She joined the lab in Fall 2019 in order to gain experience in conducting research. Toni is currently pursuing her Masters of Science in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Baruch College.

Will graduated from Mississippi State in Spring 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He joined the lab in Spring 2017. During his undergrad career, he was inducted into the university’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter, received the prestigious Magruder Scholarship, and presented poems for the university’s first TEDx program. He is currently a 3L at Florida State University College of Law.

Isabelle ComfortIsabelle graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in Spring 2020. Isabelle joined the lab in Fall 2018 for experience and to explore researching and future career plans. She will attend Arizona State University in August 2021 to pursue her Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis. She plans to become a Behavior Analyst after receiving her master’s degree.

Taylor graduated in Spring 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Mississippi State University. She joined the lab in Fall 2018 to improve her understanding of psychopathology and to gain experience in conducting research. Taylor is currently working as a training specialist in collaboration with various state agencies, training state employees in the use of computer software necessary for their work.

Lindsay graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Psychology in December 2019. She joined the lab in Fall 2018. Lindsay just graduated in nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center and is working as a Registered Nurse in the NICU at Children's of Mississippi.

She joined the lab in Spring 2020 to obtain experience in psychopathology and to learn how to apply her knowledge of behavioral research methods. Cara is currently working as the program development intern for National Alliance of Mental Illness Mississippi.

Lexi ReevesLexi graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Psychology in Spring 2019. She joined the lab in the Fall of 2017 to gain experience in psychopathology. Her research interest includes the psychology of gender, human sexuality, and depression. Lexi is pursuing her Master of Science in Industrial-Organizational Psychology at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga.
